'k, now I've finished reading this whole thread. I'm still in awe of everyone who's attempted some "translating." These are really good. When I have more time on my hands I'll find something to translate, myself...

Voronwen - yes, my 'Letters of Firiel' are all in this thread - though some are spaced apart by other letters. Did you come up with the patience required to read all 12? Those were my first attempts at fanfiction. The existence of this thread was one of the things that motivated me to start writing. I settled on Firiel as a subject because it involved Arnor/Northern Dunedain, it was an interesting story, and because she could give accounts of Arnor/Arthedain as someone new to it.

The box your fisherman found though... wasn't it encrusted with barnacles or something? He wouldn't just give it away to an odd stranger (not that you're really so odd... just a manner of speaking ) if it was clearly gold, would he? Unless it was a REALLY good day of fishing!

The box was quite tarnished and salty... making it look like nothing but a cheap trinket box one might find collecting dust in an old lady's attic.

In the clear blue of the New England afternoon, the wind blew from off the harbor, tousling my hair. I looked at the fisherman, who told me they had brought the box up with their lobster pots. He seemed clueless as to what to do with the thing. "I'm a student at the University", I told him. "If you want, I can take it to my art history professor and get her opinion about what it is, and when it's from?"

The fisherman shrugged. "Whatever," he laughed. "It looks like a piece of junk." He was right, it did. But something about it captivated me. I couldn't stop staring at it, wondering ... Why was this thing calling to me? I had to find out. He shrugged again and handed it to me.

Later that same evening, I called a friend of mine from the art department and had him come over with his jewelry tools. He got the box open for me. We knew we really should be showing this to a professor, but decided that for now, it would be our secret. For what we found inside was astounding, to say the least...

It was stuffed with delicate, time-worn yet beautiful scrolls, written in a fine and elegant, feminine hand, in silver and black. The language, if I am not mistaken, is Adunaic...

Pray, tell us, what do the scrolls say, Voronwen?

Although, I do hope the scrolls were wrapped carefully in water-tight cloth if they come form a wet environment...

Oh, that box was solid, let me tell you! Watertight. Everything inside was intact.

In time, i will reveal the contents of the scrolls...

(ie. when i am not up to my neck in 'real life' )
