Riding on the back of an Eagle (for real)

Phenomenal perspective from the back of an eagle in flight. A man training a captive eagle to fly has mounted a camera on his wingéd friend. Much more at this link.

I often wondered what Bilbo saw when he opened his eyes and peeked from the back of the eagle on the way to the Carrock. (I imagine he was much too preoccupied with holding onto Dori’s legs on the way to the eagles’ eyrie!) As soon as I saw this, Bilbo’s ride on the eagle’s back was all I could think of. (The tale of the real eagle and his quest has grown in the past few hours, though.) Some of the clips have musical soundtracks; but in those that do not: Note the sound of the wind.

The documentary series Earthflight also has some stunning onboard (onbird?) footage of flying eagles, if I recall correctly. Awe-inspiring.

If only Bilbo had had more interest in the view than his aching arms, he might have been in for a treat!
