The Silmarillion is indeed rife with fanfic-opportunity, moreso than The Hobbit or LoTR in that respect. The only downside is that you have to remember a lot of history if you want to play in that sandbox. I've never have spent as much time in the timelines for discussion than I did for fanfic and RPG-reasons.

Hey Valandil! I always enjoyed reading your writings be it here or Tolkienforums or The One Ring, etc. You always had some good North Dunedain tales.

I myself have been writing some post war North Dunedain fanfics over the last few years, and the main mash-up project has been posted by my lovely co-writer wife on Henneth Annun, and an edited version posted on The One Ring.com. Sadly, Henneth Annun has shut down ad is now only in Archive mode. Also, it was per chance that I got involved in a good old-style message-board writing RP on Council of Elrond based on the fall of Fornost in the year 1974. Clicking with a few good young writers in that story, I have again 'gotten the bug'. I have been working on some fanfic outlines based on the division of Arnor in 863, the sacking of Fornost in 1974, and the re-taking of Fornost in 1975.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Hoping everyone gets the time and muse to create some great fanfics!

Do ramble. It's always nice to hear which area or timeline people are writing in.

I made a feeble attempt at a fan-fic based in the 1st Age a number of years ago. The main character has been my only attempt at writing an elf, and my 1st at writing a woman. Only got a short ways into it, and provided a vague outline, but I used the character in some RPs based in the late 2nd and in the 3rd age. Her demise came in an RP in the years before the war. The advantage of writing an immortal character!

The Sil is quite a big sandbox, and it is a bit daunting trying to keep everything in mind while creating the sub-tale fanfics.

Indeed, not too many fandoms that offer that particular benefit.

This is mostly why I love to use the world when writing fanfic but try to use as little of the canon characters as I can, or use those that aren't well defined. Lots of those in the Sil too.

My co-writing project has concluded earlier this year, and now we are working on a bit of a prequel to it that starts during the War of the Ring.

I'm also reworking some past writings into something a bit more readable. Maybe one day I'll get some of these half-baked projects finished.

I have written quite a bit of fan-fic over the years. Here's the link to my gateway.

The woman who gave me my signature line was talking about my fan-fic character, LOL! He's a "bad boy" in every respect. And, I don't think that I should comment further.
